The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy's phenomenal success sent the book straight to Number One in the UK Bestseller List and in 1984 Douglas Adams became the youngest author to be awarded a Golden Pan. He won a further two (a rare feat), and was nominated - though not selected - for the first Best of Young British Novelists awards.

He followed this success with The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (1980); Life, The Universe and Everything (1982); So Long and Thanks for all the Fish (1984); and Mostly Harmless (1992).

The first two books in the Hitchhiker series were adapted into a 6 part television series, which was an immediate success when first aired in 1982. Other publications include Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (1987) and Long Dark Tea-time of the Soul (1988). In 1984 Douglas teamed up with John Lloyd and wrote The Meaning of Liff and after a huge success The Deeper Meaning of Liff followed this in 1990). One of Douglas's all-time personal favourites was written in 1990 when he teamed up with zoologist Mark Carwardine and wrote Last Chance to See an account of a world-wide search for rare and endangered species of animals.

Dirk Gently's Holistic
Detective Agency

Radio Series

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency : MP3 Audio
N.B. mp3 files will play on your PC / iPod, TV-DVD player and some HiFi's.

Dirk Gently's plot is non-linear, partly because time travel is one of the main elements of the story.

Four billion years ago, nine dozen multi-tentacled creatures called Salaxalans, discontent with their own world, leave and attempt to populate Earth.

They leave their mothership in orbit, but, because of the laziness of the engineer and faulty advice from their Electric Monk, an automaton designed to believe things so its owners don't have to, their landing craft explodes on Earth, triggering a spark that creates amino acids and the start of life on earth.

The Salaxalan engineer, having thus failed to complete a task during his life, is forced to wander the Earth as a ghost.

of the Soul

Radio Series

Dirk Gently
The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul
: MP3 Audio
N.B. mp3 files will play on your PC / iPod, TV-DVD player and some HiFi's.

Dirk Gently, who calls himself a "holistic detective", has happened upon what he thinks is a rather comfortable situation.

A ridiculously wealthy man in the record industry has retained him, spinning a ludicrous story about being stalked by a seven-foot-tall, green-eyed, scythe-wielding monster.

Dirk pretends to understand the man's ravings involving potatoes and a contract signed in blood coming due; in reality, however, Dirk is musing about what he might do if he actually receives payment for his "services".

Last Chance to See

Audio Book
Read by Douglas Adams

Last Chance to See : MP3 Audio
N.B. mp3 files will play on your PC / iPod, TV-DVD player and some HiFi's.

Last Chance to See by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine (the book) was first published in 1990, as a companion to the BBC radio series of the same name. The theme of documentary was to feature animal species which were endangered or threatened with extinction.

The Observer Colour Magazine initiated moves in 1985 to send a zoologist, Mark Carwardine, and a writer, Douglas Adams, to Madagascar, to search for the aye-aye, a nearly extinct lemur. Later this developed into several journeys to find various species, including the Komodo dragon on the island of Komodo in Indonesia, gorillas and white rhinoceroses in Zaire, Kakapos in New Zealand, the Yangtze River Dolphin in China, Rodrigues fruit bats (megabat) on the island of Rodrigues, and various other species in these locations.

Many of these excursions became the basis for the BBC Radio 4 series of the same name.

Salmon of Doubt :
Hitchhiking the Galaxy
One Last Time

Audio Book
Narrated by Simon Jones

Salmon of Doubt : MP3 Audio
N.B. mp3 files will play on your PC / iPod, TV-DVD player and some HiFi's.

The Salmon of Doubt is a posthumous collection of previously unpublished material by Douglas Adams. It consists largely of essays about technology and life experiences, but its major selling point is the inclusion of the incomplete novel on which Adams was working at the time of his death, The Salmon of Doubt (from which the collection gets its title, a reference to the Celtic myth of the Salmon of Wisdom, and was initially planned to be a Dirk Gently novel.

English editions of the book were published in the USA and UK in May 2002, exactly one year after the author's death.

The audiobook edition consists of 7 CDs, mostly read by Simon Jones, but also includes introductions by Stephen Fry & Christopher Cerf, read by their respective authors, as well as the tributes written and read by Richard Dawkins.

Starship Titanic
By Douglas Adams
& Terry Jones

Starship Titanic : MP3 Audio
N.B. mp3 files will play on your PC / iPod, TV-DVD player and some HiFi's.

Terry Jones (Monty Python) reads Starship Titanic - the book written by him based on Douglas Adams idea (and computer game).

The action takes place on a starship of the same name which has undergone "Spontaneous Massive Existence Failure" and crash landed on Earth on its maiden voyage (in an allusion to the 1912 disaster involving the real-world RMS Titanic).

In the game, the player acts the part of a human (whose house the starship crashed into) who goes aboard to help fix the ship, and must solve puzzles to collect the parts of the sabotaged onboard computer, Titania. Once all the parts have been collected and inserted in the correct places, Titania comes alive and talks.

The Last 20th Century Battleground

The Internet

The Last 20th Century Battleground :
The Internet
.
N.B. CDA Audio - will play on any PC / CD / DVD player.

If you believe Winn Schwartau, one of the world's leading experts on cyberterrorism, we are on the edge of a technological upheaval "the like of which has never been seen before in the history of mankind". He passionately believes that the potential of the internet to undermine society and destabilise the world has yet to be recognised. It is, at least in his view, the world's most dangerous battleground.

This may all seem a bit far fetched, but there is little doubt that what we have seen so far in terms of the internet is only the tip of the iceberg. Riding the wave of change is Douglas Adams, who recognised nearly ten years ago (in 1990) that information technology was set to revolutionise the way in which we communicate, allowing for the first time connection between communities of people across the world.
