Eddie Izzard

Edward John "Eddie" Izzard

Edward John Izzard (born 7 February 1962) is an English (although born in Aden, Yemen) stand-up comedian and actor. His comedy style takes the form of rambling, whimsical monologue and self-referential pantomime.

Eddie's works include standup sets Unrepeatable, Definite Article, Glorious, Dress to Kill, Circle, Sexie and Stripped. He had a starring role in the television series The Riches as Wayne Malloy and has appeared in many motion pictures such as Ocean's Twelve, Ocean's Thirteen, Mystery Men, The Cat's Meow and Across the Universe.

He has cited his main comical role model as Monty Python. John Cleese once referred to him as the "lost Python." He is also known for his transvestism - he is NOT gay [insert smiley here].

Dressed To Kill

  Dressed To Kill

In his show, Eddie describes himself as an "executive," "action" and "professional" transvestite, as "a male tomboy" rather than a "weirdo" transvestite - he cites J. Edgar Hoover and Hermann Göring as examples of the latter, or drag queen. He regularly cross-dresses both on and off stage and makes it clear that cross-dressing is, for him, neither a part of his performance nor a sexual fetish. He simply enjoys wearing make-up and clothing that is traditionally perceived in the West as female-only.

  Circle

Town Hall, New York City, 26 June 2000. An evening with Eddie Izzard in which he moves back and forth in time, with religion as the loose but constant theme. He begins with Pope John Paul II, and then criss-crosses to Pius XII, the Spanish Inquisition, the Crusades and Jerusalem, the world's five major religions, the Dark Ages, Jesus, and the future. Along the way, Izzard makes observations about guns and monkeys, the World Series, the NRA and the IRA, mad cows, Socrates, the Stoned Olympics, the Roman Empire, the Renaissance, and the Mona Lisa. Izzard wears black nylons, black leather pants, a black jacket and a diamond necklace.

  Glorious

Eddie Izzard's routine has a loose trajectory from the beginning of the Old Testament and the creation of the world in seven days to Revelations; God, in the voice of James Mason, makes several appearances. Along the way, Izzard dramatizes or comments on the search for a career, bad giraffes, Prince Philip's gaffes, toilets in French campsites, the mysteries of hopscotch, becoming one's Dad, getting a computer to print, and his court victory after being the victim of tranny bashing. Izzard calls his bits "mimes," in part because his physical comedy is sans props. Filmed at Labatt's Apollo Theatre, Izzard is in a shimmering red pants suit and low heels.

  Definative Article

Well what can you say about Eddie Izzard? well he is bloody funny to start with. This stage show which was recorded at the Shaftesbury theatre ,London is without doubt one of his best. His topic of discusion range from Noah to fashion(cool, cool, normal, looking like a dick head, cool!) and from James Bond to why dogs got the first say in how to have sex and why all the other animals had to do it doggy style! If you get the video there is a documentary on it which follows him around the world with his act. He even plays in Paris and tries to do it in french. If you have never seen Eddie Izzard watch the Definite Article. 8 out of 10

  Live At The Ambassador

If you are fortunate enough to get a copy of this Out of Print Video (until they release it onb DVD), you will see Eddie in a way you really haven't before. It is definitely classic material. Though he's still honing the rough edges in his style, it is still far better than most so-called stand-ups who all seem to think anymore that the only way to get a laugh is to curse. Yes, there is occasional profanity, but it's more part of the dialog and is natural in his speech, not overbearing and forced. Also, Eddie is dressed in a very different manner. It seems like a suit a man would wear, and no obvious makeup other than some nail polish. But again, that's rarely the point of his routine. I found that his more conservative look actually was a bit less distracting (the first time you watch him, his look distracts you for a bit normally, but you soon forget).
