The Yellow House

Starring...
John Simm

  The Yellow House

About the relationship between Van Gogh & Gaugain

Very well written, acted and filmed. The research that has gone into it seems considerable, and then used in an intelligent way to produce a superb piece of drama.

The film reminds us of just how much work Van Gogh produced in such a short space of time before his untimely death (aged 37) - what we now we regard as some of his best.

I'd suggest that some of the films finest moments pass almost without us realising the true meaning of the very carefully chosen dialogue.

In particular the line "It was you - you made me do it" after a scene of destruction will resonate with anyone who has ever worked with anyone with mental health problems, and contains enough different meanings to write a book about.

This work is a valient attempt to explain the unexplainable, whilst at the same time holding it's audience.

Amelie

Starring...
Audrey Tatou
Mathew Kassovitz

  Amelie

A slice of heaven right here on earth, "Amelie" is a joy to behold, and has some of the most gorgeous cinematography I've ever seen in a movie.

Audrey Tatou is perfection as the title character. A combination of Audrey Hepburn, Dolly Levi and Roger Rabbit, she involves herself in the world surrounding her as a means of really enjoying living. There are moments when she finds complete and total joy just walking down the street.

Some of it is hilarious, too..like when her pet goldfish habitually tries to commit suicide, or when she is on the telephone with the man at the porno shop, or when a character is asked "Are you a congenital shmuck"?

But for the most part, its a human comedy, about love, of course.

  Dirty Tricks

Dirty Tricks stars Martin Clunes, who plays an English tutor at an Oxford language school. Although Edward can be charming and thoughtful, this camouflages an underlying calculating liar and manipulator.

And although things are going great financially for Edward at the moment, he is under suspicion by a local CID inspector after a couple of murders in the area. An innocent dinner invitation by his friend and his wife triggers a series of events which lead our hero Edward down a very precarious and hilarious path.

The show is stolen by Neil Morrissey's performance as Charlie/Charlotte, but the rest of the Hunters (and the rest of the cast; Jane Horrocks' versatility shines through yet again, with the whole idea of her being a lesbian landlady in a seaside resort b&b verging on the ridiculous) add in some vital and amazingly funny elements.

Crumb

Starring...
Robert Crumb
Aline Kominsky
Charles Crumb
Max Crumb
Robert Hughes

  Crumb

Crumb takes a deeply personal look at 60's counterculture artist Robert Crumb. The film focuses upon three decades of Crumb's artwork to reconstruct his unhappy childhood, days with Zap Comix in the late 60's, `dark side' period and recent life. Interviews with him, his wife Aline, family and friends reveal the motives behind his astounding creativity. Crumb is sometimes hilarious, often depressing and always entertaining – a rare combination in a documentary film.

After a few years of fame, he retired from Zap to express the darker side of his nature. His later work frequently contained sadistic and violent themes and was sometimes labeled as pornography by friends and critics alike. Even Crumb isn't sure of his intent: `Maybe I should be locked up and my pencils taken away from me'.

Critic Robert Hughes says that in Crumb's world there are no heroes and `even the victims are comic' – ideas that don't jive with traditional American culture. But Crumb has always considered himself to be an outsider and enjoys the feeling of `being very removed or extremely separated from the rest of humanity and the world in general'. `Words fail me, pictures aren't much better' to describe his disgust with American consumerism. He now lives in France because its culture is `slightly less evil than the United States'.

The film is embarrassingly candid about unhappy details of Crumb's life, such as his brothers' mental illness, experiments with drugs and ambivalent attitudes towards women. Yet it is apparent that there is no misery or violence in this man – it's all on paper.

  Fire In The Sky

This film recreates the strange events which happened November 5, 1975 in the town Snowflake, Arizona. Travis Walton works as a logger in the woods. When he and his colleagues drive home after work, they encounter an UFO.

For the next five days Travis disappears and his colleagues are accused of murder. When he reappears, first he didn't remember that he was gone, but in time the terrible memories come back...

Many say this is superior to the more famous Close Encounters Of the Third Kind as it's less Hollywood and more believable.

Killing Dad (or How To Love Your Mother)

Richard E as Mr Greb and Julie Walters - together. Dream combination. A bit of Withnail and I plus Personal Services (1987) blended by experts.

Set in part in Southend, Essex, a look at mummy's boy Mr Greb being "seduced" by boozy Julie Walters as he searches for his long lost Dad. Denholm Elliot plays Julie's boyfriend.

Lovely one-liners such as the bit where Denholm returns drunk to the Hotel they are staying at (long-term) and Julie is annoyed, so shouts "Matty, you will not treat my home like a hotel". Marvellous.

JOE ORTON

  What The Butler Saw

White golliwogs, cross-dressing coppers, bellboy rapists, insanity, incest, and Winston Churchill’s giant member all play their part in this trouser-soilingly funny BBC production of Joe Orton’s farcical, bitingly satirical 1969 play, in which the head psychiatrist of a lunatic asylum, when trying to conceal the attempted molestation of his new secretary (Tessa Peake-Jones in sexy underwear is a treat) from his wife, only succeeds in making himself (and everyone else) look completely round the bend.

Originally What The Butler Saw starring Prunella Scales (Fawlty Towers) / Tessa Peake-Jones (Only Fools & Horses) was a play from 1969, it was later adapter for TV in 1987 and never been released on VHS / DVD, although you can buy the paperback from Amazon.
