Walkabout
Jenny Agutter
Luc Roeg
David Gulpilil
Superb cinematography, the Australian outback comes alive in this film of self discovery and regret. Agutter plays the English girl brilliantly, incapable of comprehending anybody or anything that doesn't conform to her middle-class values and upbringing. Roeg is also excellent as her brother, adapting to each and every change in circumstance as only children can. I have watched this movie many times, and always get something new from it. Highly recommended to anyone, although parents might want to watch it before letting their kids see it. 1971 100

How To Get Ahead In Advertising.
Richard E.Grant
Racheal Ward
Richard Wilson

Directed by Bruce Robinson

This is a film which attacks consumerism from within.

Richard E. Grant's character starts out as a top advertising executive who ends up through the stress of his job, a manic loonatic running around his garden naked, making video blogs (before its time) to his wife with a cardboard box on his head and setting defrosted chickens free down the toilet. Once seen, never forgotten.

It's very British, and very 80's, but its message is still as universal as ever. Fans of Withnail & I will not be dissapointed for sheer originality and inventiveness (it has the same writer / director - Bruce Robinson).

Popular myth holds that William (Deacon) Brodie built the first gallows in Edinburgh and was also its first victim using a gallows Brodie had designed and funded the year before.

According to one tale, Brodie wore a steel collar and silver tube to prevent the hanging from being fatal, but it failed and he was burried in an unmarked grave in Buccleuch, although rumours were that Brodie was seen in Paris the following year.

Brodie was a Scottish cabinet-maker, deacon of the trades guild and Edinburgh city councillor, who maintained a secret life as a burglar, partly for the thrill, and partly to fund his gambling. This inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Amelie
Audrey Tatou
Mathew Kassovitz

A slice of heaven right here on earth, "Amelie" is a joy to behold, and has some of the most gorgeous cinematography I've ever seen in a movie.

Audrey Tatou is perfection as the title character. A combination of Audrey Hepburn, Dolly Levi and Roger Rabbit, she involves herself in the world surrounding her as a means of really enjoying living. There are moments when she finds complete and total joy just walking down the street.

Some of it is hilarious, too..like when her pet goldfish habitually tries to commit suicide, or when she is on the telephone with the man at the porno shop, or when a character is asked "Are you a congenital shmuck"?

But for the most part, its a human comedy, about love, of course.
