Smith & Jones

Alas Smith & Jones

Alas Smith and Jones was a British comedy sketch television series featuring Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones. It was broadcast on the BBC from 1984 to 1998. From 1989 to 1992 and 1995 to 1998, it was called Smith and Jones.

The series followed in the footsteps of Not The Nine O'Clock News in its use of taboo-breaking material and sketches in questionable taste (as well as bad language), and also featured head-to-head 'duologues' between Smith and Jones.

A space ship stops at an intergalactic fuel station. While the captain's refueling, one of his idiotic companions plays with the controls and accidently starts the ship and crashes into the earth. This causes a sensation: the media celebrates the extraterrestrials, the military interrogates them for eternal wisdom.

However soon they recognize that the fellows are dumb as bricks - although some generals believe it's just a mask.

Great Cities of The World

Starring...
Griff Rhys Jones

Great Cities of The World - 60 mins each.

   London
A whistle-stop tour of London, featuring visits to such tourist attractions as Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, together with lesser-known locales - notably the macabre Necropolis Railway in Westminster Road. Other ports of call include Sotheby's, St Paul's Cathedral, Burlington Arcade and the city's financial district - along with a late-night boxing club where brokers can work off their aggression in the ring.

   New York
Visits to major metropolises, beginning with New York, where Griff gets his hands dirty with the Sanitation Department, cleans the windows of a skyscraper and goes backstage at a Broadway production. Among his other ports of call are Grand Central Station, the Morgan Stanley children's hospital, and a factory founded more than 150 years ago that employs 450 people to make exactly the same thing that it first manufactured in 1853 - Steinway pianos.

   Paris
A whistle-stop tour of Paris, which survived World War Two unscathed because Hitler considered it `too beautiful to bomb.' Included on the itinerary are visits to such instantly recognisable landmarks as the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe, together with an expedition into the famous catacombs, a late-night shift at a brasserie, and a stint with the city's graffiti eradication squad.
