Alexei Sayle

Alexei Sayle

Sayle, a central part of the alternative comedy circuit in the early 1980s, was voted 18th on a list of the 100 Greatest Stand Ups.

Much of Sayle's humour is in the tradition of Spike Milligan and Monty Python, with riffs based on an absurd and surreal premise. His act is notable for cynicism, intelligence and political awareness, as well as physical comedy.

Sayle's trademark appearance is a shaved head, five o'clock shadow, and a suit that is a size or two too small.

  Paris - Series 1 : 6 episodes - 30 minutes each.

  Unreleased on DVD

An imaginative look at Eurpoe in the 20s and 30s that is both pretty precise but also very funny. Blackadder was a kind of diluted version whereas this directly lampooned the political intrigues of the early 20th century instead of just laughing at fart jokes.

Who can forget such unforgettable lines as "A German fascist? Well, I never!" What about the performance by Windsor Davis as the repressed homosexual Masquerading as a butch butcher and "Ernest Hemmingbeck" fan.

Definitely his best cameo role. Not forgetting Neil Morrissey as his sidekick, Rochet and the hilarious Alan Corduner as the tortured music teacher suffering at the voice box of Mme Ovary.

Great Train Journey

Starring...
Alexei Sayle

  Great Train Journey :50 minutes

Comedian Alexei Sayle attempts to travel from Aleppo in northern Syria to Aqaba in Jordan on the Red Sea, by a variety of trains.

The first leg of the journey is Aleppo to Lattakia on the Mediterranean coast. On arrival at Lattakia, Alexei takes a taxi to al Siwar restaurant where he meets Syria's favourite comic Bashar Ismail.

Then it's back on the train heading for the Syrian capital Damascus, but stopping off for a short break at Crac de Chevaliers where Khaled Mourad and his father show Alexei round the castle.

On reaching Hejaz station, Alexei manages to catch the International Train to Deraa, and then takes a steam (actually diesel) train from Deraa to Bosra where he visits the Roman amphitheatre, but turns out to be two months early for the annual music and arts festival.

He then passes through Amman, hitches a lift on a service trolley to Petra, and takes a freight train for the final leg of the journey to Wadi Rum and on to Aqaba where, at journey's end, he reflects on 'the explosive intimacy of the Middle East'.
