Craig Cash

Craig Cash

Cash is best known for playing slightly dull and dopey working-class northern men, particularly Dave Best in the hugely successful BBC sitcom The Royle Family, which he co-wrote along with Caroline Aherne. He has also written for The Fast Show and for Aherne on The Mrs Merton Show.

Craig first rose to prominence in the late 1980s/early 1990s as a music radio DJ on cult south Manchester station KFM, where his shows featured a section entitled Who's Mother, featuring the vocal talents of Caroline Aherne. During this period he was also the manager of the band That Uncertain Feeling.

Most recently, Cash has teamed up with Phil Mealey to write the critically acclaimed BBC sitcom Early Doors and is currently advertising Norwich Union on television. He has written a new drama called Sunshine which was filmed in Marple, Greater Manchester and started on BBC 1 on October 7.

Cash currently lives in Marple, Greater Manchester. He has two sons called Harry and Billy, who appeared in the one-off episode of The Royle Family entitled "The Queen of Sheba".

Early Doors - Series 1

It was originally intended that this sitcom, set in a typical northern local pub called The Grapes, would be written jointly by Craig Cash and Caroline Aherne.

Aherne, however, quit England and so Cash asked his old friend Phil Mealey to come on board.

Together they produced a low-key modern classic, taking the dowdy, naturalistic feel of The Royle Family, but placing it in a setting which provided a more eclectic bunch of characters.

Early Doors - Series 2

Landlord Ken has been left by his wife (for his best friend), but lives with his adopted daughter Melanie and mother Jean.

Jean browbeats her canny home help Winnie, whilst Melanie has a naïve young boyfriend called Liam (although James McAvoy's burgeoning career lead to him vanishing and being replaced by new beau Dean for series two).

The pub regulars were written and cast to perfection, each instantly believable: cheeky chappies Joe and Duffy, whose close friendship dates back to childhood; dull couple Joan and Eddie: the latter alarmingly knowledgeable about local traffic flow; Old Tommy, the typical grumpy, avaricious old soak; single mother Janice and Phil and Nige: indolent and crooked local Bobbies

Sunshine

Sunshine has really stand out funny moments but it's really about the relationship between the 3 generations of Crosby men- George (Hill), Bing (Coogan) and Joe (young Dominic).

It was a pleasure to watch the relationship with George and his grandson and the chemistry was wonderful. It was incredibly moving towards the end. We knew it was leading up to sadness - but I was surprised how moving it was.

It was brilliantly performed. Lisa Millet deserves mention here too. I found she was so good in the role of Coogan's girlfriend a very warm performance.
