Magnetic North
Jonathan Meades

  Magnetic North

"To be northern," Jonathan Meades declared near the start of Magnetic North, "is to be for ever ill at ease with oneself".

Is this true? Like so much that Meades proposes, it won't stand up to much dispassionate scrutiny, although it feels true when he says it. And certainly, it's not altogether false: as he pointed out, in this country, we seem to spend an inordinate amount of time and money chasing after the south, taking our holidays there, eating the food, drinking the wine, but none of this can change the fact that we are of the north.

Joe Building
The Stalin Memorial Lecture

Joe Building: The Stalin Memorial Lecture

Jonathan Meades dissects Stalinist architecture as if it were a Russian doll, revealing layers of style and a legacy of monumental buildings. Stalin himself was airbrushed out of Russian history in the late 1950s, but the buildings and icons created by his regime cannot be seen in isolation from the man who ruled the Soviet Union with an iron hand. Alanoz said: "Actually I don't trust a word he says to be true, I just adore his surreal style and the way he constantly finds something new to insult people with and never cares how offensive he's being.

Victoria Died in 1901 and Is Still Alive Today

Jonathan Meades explores the architectural legacy of Queen Victoria's reign.

She is supposed to have departed this Earth a hundred years ago, our Queen and Empress Victoria Regina. She is supposed to have slipped away, to be reunited with her beloved Albert and his cock ring. Can we be sure of this? It sometimes feels as though she's all around us.

Think of all the pubs, train stations the statues of her, and buildings named after Victoria - she's definately still alive today.

Apart from the Virgin Mary there are more statues of Victoria than anyone else.
